I heard about these auctions when doing some research for my mame cabinet. When Joff picked up the Space Invaders cabinet in August he told me that he's picked up a few games at the starbust auctions as well. I wanted to go to the August auction, but that didn't work out for two reasons: 1) It was one or two days after the blackout and I couldn't find out for sure it was still on and 2) It was happening the same day I was leaving for Algonquin - so time would be really tight. I decided just to wait until the October auction and here's what happened.
Bryson and I filled up the van's gas tank ($59.02) and headed for the 401 at about 8:30am. Thanks to Mapquest, I had a pretty good idea how to get there.

Me driving down the 401 for the first time by myself. This isn't the best picture of me, but I don't have any others of me driving - so it'll have to do. People drive like maniacs on the 401. |
After a little more than an hour we got off the 401 and eventually found Kippling St. It wasn't long until we pulled into the Starbust Coin back lot.

We pulled in at about 9:45am. The auction was supposed to start at 11:30am, so we had nearly 2hrs to Play Test anything we wanted. Fun! There's over 130 items up for auction and only about 15 plugs, so you need a long extension cord if you want to test anything. It's a very good idea to try out anything you might want to bid on before you actually bid. Some games didn't power up, although 90-95% of them did.
I'm not sure if you need to be 18 to bid - but they didn't ask and I didn't tell. I paid the $200cdn deposit to get a bidding number, signed the contract and started to look around.
The auction was really interesting. They had many, many arcade machines, a few pool tables, an air hockey table and surprisingly enough - 3 shuffleboard games ranging from 10-15ft long. Check out the next page for a continued recount of the event as well as a pricelist showing what everything was sold for.
